Far Cry 6, the highly anticipated next instalment in Ubisoft's Far Cry series, is in development and we're expecting to see it on consoles and PC sometime later this year.
In a serious departure from the setting of Far Cry 5, Far Cry 6 will take us to a "tropical paradise frozen in time" called Yara. Yara is controlled by dictator Anton Castillo (played by Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito), who aims to restore the paradise to glory with help from his son, Diego - through any means necessary. However, a revolution is taking place in Yara which aims to take down Castillo. Players will step into the shoes of protagonist Dani, a revolutionist in the fight against Castillo.
At the moment, though we know a reasonable amount about the plot of Far Cry 6, its release date is still a mystery. The game was originally scheduled to release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Stadia on February 18 2021 but after delaying it, Ubisoft hasn't confirmed another date, though there have been multiple inconclusive leaks. Given we're now into 2021 and in the game's (admittedly wide) release window, we're hoping that will change sometime soon.

Far Cry 6 release date
Far Cry 6 was set to release on February 18, 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Google Stadia but has since been delayed. Ubisoft made the announcement during its financial earnings report, and stated the game will arrive after April 2021 but no later than March 2022.
In a February 2021 earnings call, Ubisoft has narrowed down the release window for Far Cry 6 ever so slightly. In the call (via VGC), Ubisoft’s chief financial officer Frédérick Duguet said that the plan is to release Far Cry 6 by the end of Q3, meaning we should see it by September 30 2021. This isn’t a solid release date by any means, but it does narrow that window down slightly.
Ubisoft has confirmed that PS4 and Xbox One players will be able to upgrade their versions of the game to the Xbox Series X and PS5 versions for free.

Far Cry 6 news and rumors
Below we've rounded up all the biggest news and rumors surrounding Far Cry 6:
Ubisoft attending E3
E3 2021 will be an all-digital affair and Ubisoft has been confirmed as one of the publishers that will be attending. Naturally, we don't know what Ubisoft is planning to bring to the table for E3 2021 but, given we still don't have a release date for Far Cry 6 we think it's possible the game will make an appearance at the show. It would, after all, be the perfect time for Ubisoft to confirm that brand new release date and maybe show some gameplay footage.
“Just a bit longer”
Far Cry 6 Game Design Director, Ted Timmins, has said fans will have to wait “just a bit longer” for more from Far Cry 6. Responding to a fan who tweeted to ask when some Far Cry 6 gameplay will be revealed, Timmins responded to say “Just for a bit longer but we have exciting content to show. Hope you’ll like it!”

Narrowing down the date
In a February 2021 earnings call, Ubisoft has narrowed down the release window for Far Cry 6 ever so slightly. In the call (via VGC), Ubisoft’s chief financial officer Frédérick Duguet said that the plan is to release Far Cry 6 by the end of Q3, meaning we should see it by September 30 2021. This isn’t a solid release date by any means, but it does narrow that window down slightly.
Don’t fall for the beta scam
Ubisoft has warned eager Far Cry fans not to be taken in by a recent email scam promising access to a Far Cry 6 beta. YouTuber theRadBrad (via Eurogamer), called attention to the phishing scam, tweeting, “There is an email from the official Ubisoft address going around that claims beta access to Far Cry 6. It even has an embargo with a special password for access.”
Ubisoft itself responded to confirm that the emails are a scam and said, “Please do not respond if you have received this email or similar.”
We can confirm the email regarding FC6 beta access is a phishing attempt. It has been reported. Please do not respond if you have received this email or similar. Thank you for the report! https://t.co/G7jBlRS6IWFebruary 19, 2021
Release date leaks
After delaying Far Cry 6, Ubisoft hasn’t given a new solid release date for the game just yet. However, there have been leaks online which suggest it might not be all that far away.
The first leak came in late 2020 (via Eurogamer), when Far Cry 6 appeared on the Microsoft Store page with a release date of May 26 2020 attached. This information has since disappeared, though, and hasn’t been confirmed by Ubisoft.
A second release date leak emerged more recently, in January 2021, and it suggested that the game might actually arrive sooner than May. On the site of the Dutch retailer, Proxis (Via NME) Far Cry 6 was listed as having a release date of April 30 2021. This has since been changed to December 31 2021, which seems likely to be a placeholder date.
In fact, it’s possible that both of these dates were placeholders given they’re different, have since been removed, and we’re still waiting for an official release date from Ubisoft. At the moment, it's best to assume that Far Cry 6 still doesn't have a solid release date until it comes from Ubisoft itself.
Dani Rojas
In Far Cry 6, players take on the role of Dani Rojas, a guerrilla fighter aiming to topple Castillo's tyrannical regime. You will be able to choose Dani's gender at the start of the game and customize them, like in Far Cry 5. In addition, Dani's actions will have a direct impact on the world and they will have more agency than we've seen with other protagonists in the series to date - with Dani starring in cutscenes and having their own voice.
Amigos
Fangs for Hire will be making a return in the form of 'Amigos', allowing you to recruit animal companions to assist you in fights. So far we only know one animal recruit: Chorizo, an adorable (but feisty) Dachshund.
Yara's mixed environment
In an interview with GameSpot, narrative director Navid Khavari called Far Cry 6 the "ambitious open-world yet". According to Khavari, the island of Yara encompasses a mix of jungles, coastal towns, farmland, and urban environments for the player to explore.
Frozen in time
Although Far Cry 6 is set in present day, due to Castillo's oppressive regime the island appears as though stuck it's stuck in the 1960s. That means you can expect vintage cars, gadgets and weapons.
