Keyboard icon used for Google Assistant mysteriously disappears on some Android phones

The keyboard icon on the bottom of Google Assistant has disappeared on some Android handsets, leaving an empty white space. This has the makings of a bug since tapping on the empty spot still calls up the QWERTY keyboard.
